Course description:

In “Making Contact” we begin the process of relaxing our habits, agendas and preconceptions in order to see the world as it truly is. At first, we begin to differentiate between fresh seeing and our usual habitual ways of seeing. It will become apparent that seeing more deeply lies on the other side of boredom, and this is one way we can cut through our habitual ways of labeling and judging, or fitting things into categories such as “beautiful” and “not beautiful” or “like” and “dislike.” When we relax our “preference files” we discover “THAT-NESS.”

In this workshop we learn:

  • how to recognize freshness
  • how to turn our awareness out
  • what prevents us from authentic seeing
  • what is on the other side of boredom

The training exercises include:

  • Recognizing Freshness
  • Seeing the One Thing
  • Deep Noticing
  • Core Practice

What is a workshop day like?

In the morning we all meet together for a lecture and exercises. At the end of the exercises the teachers will give an assignment. During the middle of the day, students go out and shoot the assignment on their own and have lunch. In the afternoon everyone comes back to the classroom to edit the photos they just took on their laptops. Then we share all of the images discuss everyone’s work together. We usually begin at 9:30am and end around 5:00pm.

Course description:

This course is about the “heartbeat” of perception, the non-static, transient moments that are all around us. Every photograph we take is of a moment, takes place in a moment. Most of the time our photos are of things that are static or still. However, there is also the non-static in these moments. There is no easy way to approach this other than to be receptive and have our awareness turned out. We must use our intuition and “feel our way” into these situations.
